We have all known some of the effects of ‘bearing false witness against our neighbor’ in the tittle-tattle that was shared at recess in the playground - or later on at the coffee break in the office. We’ve even seen its effects in personal friendships in business.

But we’ve never seen its society-wide effects as we have become increasingly uncertain about what the truth really is about this or that government official - or this or that financial state of a company or a highly-respected authority in finance or business. This is an abuse of truth that effectively leaves us dumb-founded as we begin to question our most reliable newspapers and television personalities.

So we are experiencing the two powerful effects of the liar - distrust of people we trusted and of institutions we depended upon.
