THE DESTRUCTION OF SOCIETY
The great benefit of our present trial is that we see clearly the destructive power of lies. We have all known some of the effects of ‘bearing false witness against our neighbor’ in the tittle-tattle that was shared at recess in the playground - or later on at the coffee break in the office. We’ve even seen its effects in personal friendships in business.
But we’ve never seen its society-wide effects as we have become increasingly uncertain about what the truth really is about this or that government official - or this or that financial state of a company or a highly-respected authority in finance or business. This is an abuse of truth that effectively leaves us dumb-founded as we begin to question our most reliable newspapers and television personalities.
So we are experiencing the two powerful effects of the liar - distrust of people we trusted and of institutions we depended upon.
